“Is this really casein protein?? It tastes like a milkshake to me….very creamy and I only use water. It is tasty and mixes well. I use it at night an hour or so before I go to bed. It fills me up as well. I highly recommend this product.”

“I’ve been taking this protein straight for about two months and I haven’t seen a difference in mass, but all my buddies and my girl say I’m getting huge. I like this protein because you take it at night before bed and you don’t wake up hungry in the middle of the night. It’s a slow acting protein so your body doesn’t break down the muscles your trying to build and doesn’t sit on your stomach. I like it too because it’s not really thick like whey even though I’m allergic to it I still try to add it into my casein sometimes. All in all very good product wouldn’t not recommend the mint chocolate chip because it tastes just like the ice cream and I’ve never been a fan of it.”

“Casein is famous for being a slow-digestion protein. I have been using this product for six months now, and over the course I can confidently say that never in the mornings I have woken up extremely hungry. It ensures that the user never enters a stage at which they are hungry, and thus hurt their muscle.”
Testimonial
“I would recommend this for those who would want to ensure that their body does not go hungry in the 6-8 hours they sleep.”
Testimonial
“Mixes well with water and yoghurt, and tastes good. I like it more than the PhD Pharma 6 hour blend now. Optimum is a reputable company and price is reasonable. Have ordered more.”

Micellar Casein
Casein, the protein found in milk, is sometimes referred to as the “slow-acting” protein. This is because it takes longer to digest than whey (the other milk protein), as it slowly releases amino acids into the bloodstream. Unlike whey, casein is high in the amino acid glutamine – useful in repair after workouts. It is also closely associated with helping muscle fatigue. Incidentally, it is often recommended to take protein supplementation before going to bed. An assessment of 44 young men was conducted during a 12-week schedule. One group consumed a protein supplement containing 27.5 g of protein, 15 g of carbohydrate, and 0.1 g of fat every night before they went to sleep. The other group received a non-caloric placebo. The conclusion was that protein ingestion before sleep represents an effective dietary strategy to augment muscle mass and strength gains during resistance exercise training in young men.
Enzyme Complex (Amylase, Protease, Cellulase, Beta-D-Galactosidase, Lipase)
Enzymes are biological catalysts, meaning they speed up biological and chemical reactions. Some manufacturers include enzymes in protein powders to speed up the breakdown of protein, therefore increasing its rate of absorption.
Our Verdict
A top brand by a top company. This is a slow-releasing protein powder, and the consensus is that it is best consumed in the evenings before sleep. The advantage of this is that you won’t wake up with that nagging “I need to eat something” feeling. An enzyme complex coupled with quality micellar casein ensures a top-notch product, backed up by favourable reviews.
