“A great product that I’ve been using for years. The BSN range has to be one of the best tasting products around but is still high quality! Would recommend a small tub to try the flavours to find one you’ll be happy to buy in bulk. Mix with milk for the best taste, texture and a filling serving!”

“I recently started my journey into bodybuilding (I’ve been training for about 2 months) and although I’ve gained some strength, I haven’t really put on any weight. I thought I’d give supplements a shot as I’m 6ft 1, weighing a mere 148 pounds (67kg). I originally ordered Mutant Mass (Vanilla ice cream) and I just couldn’t stomach the taste so I decided to purchase BSN True-Mass. Let me tell you, the chocolate milkshake flavour actually tastes better than an actual milkshake. If taste is a big factor for you when it comes to powders, I’d definitely recommend this.”

“By far the best gainer I have ever tried. Flavour and quality wise, I believe True Mass is at the top of the gainer category. It has helped me so much with my bulking and has made gaining weight and consuming enough calories effortless. I have tried other gainers and believe me, True Mass is on another level with its taste. Highly recommend for any lifter looking to bulk up.”

Ingredient Explanations
Protein Matrix comprising:
Whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, micellar casein, calcium caseinate, milk protein isolate, egg albumen, glutamine peptides
Whey and casein are the two main proteins in milk and other dairy products. For True-Mass’s “Protein Matrix”, we’ll include a discussion on general protein.
Protein isolates vary from protein concentrates in that the isolates contain a greater concentration of protein (as high as 90% protein purity, compared with 30-80% protein purity in concentrates).
A review was conducted after a study of healthy adults from 18-50 years of age. The study compared the effects of protein supplements alone or in combination with carbohydrates. The results were for untrained individuals, consuming supplemental protein likely has no impact on lean mass and muscle strength during the initial weeks of resistance training. [6]. However, as the duration, frequency, and amount of resistance training increased, protein supplementation may promote muscle hypertrophy and enhance gains in muscle strength in both untrained and trained individuals. Evidence also suggests that protein supplementation may accelerate gains in both aerobic and anaerobic power. [6].
The review’s conclusion? It suggested that protein supplementation may enhance muscle mass and performance when the training stimulus is adequate (e.g. frequency, volume, duration), and dietary intake is consistent with recommendations for physically active individuals. [6].
Calcium caseinate is a form of casein used in drinks and powders because of its ease to dilute with liquids. It also breaks down more slowly that other proteins.
Egg white proteins are the principal solutes present in egg white, making up approximately 10% of its weight. [7].
Glutamine is an essential amino acid. It plays a role in the recovery of stress and athletic exercise. [8].

Our Verdict
A monster hit of protein delivered by a highly respected manufacturer. True-Mass also scores points with its popular flavours (better than milkshakes?). The only downside is each serving costs about £2 / $3 so you may have to shop around to find the best deals.
